Description
Blue brocade silk trousseau dress with matching cape, worn by Adeline Parsons Newhall about 1850. Includes fabric sample. The dress is completely handsewn, 54" (l). V-shaped bodice is supported with whalebone in each dart and at center front and back; wool padding; brown cotton or linen lining; hook-and-eye closure on back. Pagoda sleeves with shoulder mancherettes are lined with fine glazed linen, decorated along the edges with netting and soutache trim to imitate lace. The skirt is cartridge pleated and attached to the bodice edge, lined with fine glazed white linen; has a pocket in the seam on the righthand side; hem is trimmed with a woven wool braid. Hem circumference is 140". The 23" (l) matching cape is trimmed with 5" (w) silk knotted fringe, closes with two straight pins.
