Description

Travel scrapbook documenting 1905 trip to Europe taken by Louise Maria Delabarre Penniman, Frank Chandler Penniman, and a young companion. The 94-page ruled-paper book (9” x 7”) consists of handwritten travelogue and many inserts and attachments, including letters, calling and business cards, cuttings from travel guides and brochures, maps, pressed flowers and plant specimens, photographs, programs, postcards, souvenir items, and a typed itinerary. Many of the pages are acidic, chipped and torn at the edges and have come loose from the binding. The book covers travel from New York City on April 8, 1905 to Gibraltar on April 17, 1905, and continental travel in Italy, Switzerland, and Germany, up until July 8, 1905. The remining tour destinations, through more of Germany and Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, England, and France are not covered in the scrapbook, or the tour was altered or aborted.
