Description
Handwritten, 2-page letter on 9" x 5 1/2" writing paper, from Mira Rowe, writing from Hudson, NY, to Samuel Bigelow, with the 37th Mass. Regiment in Virginia, March 18, 1863. The author had travelled from Conway, Mass. to Hudson, NY to consult with her brother and ask him to accompany her to visit her 17-year-old son, Frederick E. Rowe, in a military hospital, presumably in Virginia. Frederick Rowe served alongside Bigelow in Company H of the Mass. 37th. She decides not to make the trip to see her son because it is deemed by friends to be unsafe. She asks Samuel to check on Frederick for her.
The letter was folded into the front of Samuel Bigelow's pocket diary (CHS-2017-007)
The letter encloses another letter (not found) written to Lucius W. Merrifield, another Conway man serving in the same regiment.
Fold marks, staining and small tears.
