Subject

Sherman, Chester Tyler, 1863-1907
Pierce, Frederick Clifton, 1855-1904

Description

5-page handwritten letter, signed, missing first page(s), from Chester Tyler Sherman of Washington, DC, to [probably] Frederick C. Pierce of Chicago, who was writing a history of Conway. Letter discusses various papers in Sherman's possession, including copies of Conway centennial material; descendants who served in the Revolutionary War and other Sherman family members; photographs of family members; Crittenden family, Dickinson family, Oaks family, Marshall Field and Field family; and genealogy of Sherman family.

Pierce, who had written about the Field family, visited Conway in 1900 and secured material for a town history that he planned to publish in two volumes. He died before completing the manuscript. The 1917 history edited by Rev. Charles Stanley Pease is in part based on and makes use of the Pierce manuscript and research materials.
